Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL), Rock Rail and Siemens Mobility have unveiled the design for 61 new Mireo Plus B battery-electric trains that will serve the Northern Westphalia network in Germany.
The trains will be financed and provided by Rock Rail and manufactured by Siemens Mobility. From December 2029, they are scheduled to begin gradually replacing the network’s diesel fleet. The fleet is expected to operate around 7.1 million train kilometres each year, making it a major step in the modernisation of regional rail services across East Westphalia-Lippe and the Münsterland. Once in service, it will be Germany’s second-largest battery-electric train fleet.
The new blue-green design gives the fleet a distinctive identity rooted in the region. It is part of NWL’s wider plan to create a more consistent look and feel for public transport across Westphalia-Lippe, helping passengers recognise their local services and find their way more easily.
A consistent design also means the trains can remain visibly connected to the region if the operator of a service changes during the fleet’s lifetime. NWL has developed the design as the commissioning authority, so the trains’ identity can continue to reflect the network and its passengers over the long term.
Battery-electric trains can run without local exhaust emissions, supporting quieter journeys and the transition away from diesel on routes that are not fully electrified. The Mireo Plus B fleet will bring this technology to regional services across Northern Westphalia.
Rock Rail is proud to be financing and providing the fleet as part of its long-term commitment to modern rail infrastructure in Germany. Working with NWL and Siemens Mobility, we are helping deliver trains designed to serve the region for decades.
